HORTICULTURAL SKILL TRAINING This program is given in collaboration
with the Rusk Vocational Services Department and New York State's VESID,
Vocational Employment Services for Individuals with Disabilities. The Glass
Garden program offers a three-month technical training program for individuals
to help them secure jobs in the horticulture and interior plantscape industry
New York City. Training is hands-on in the gardens and offices of the Medical
Center. Trainees learn needs of plants in addition to installation and maintenance
techniques.
PREVOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR THE DEVELOPMENTALLY
DISABLED The Glass Garden offers a training program for young adults from
YAI, National Institute for People with Disabilities, an organization which
serves individuals with developmental disabilities. Trainees come with
their job coach twice weekly to work in the gardens. They plant annuals
and vegetables, water, harvest crops, compost, plant bulbs, and practice
many skills needed for future competitive employment.
