Dr. Samir Taneja

Samir S. Taneja, M.D., completed his surgical and urologic training at the University of California at Los Angeles and joined the NYU faculty in 1996. He was named the American Foundation for Urologic Disease/Prostate Health Council Research Scholar in 1996 and in 1998 received an NIH Career Development Award for study of the role of the androgen receptor in prostate cancer growth. Through collective support from the Chemotherapy Foundation, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Department of Defense and the NIH, Dr. Taneja and his collaborators have identified a novel coactivator, ART-27, that regulates prostate cancer growth and differentiation.

Dr. Taneja's surgical practice has focused on nerve-sparing prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, renal laparoscopy and techniques of bladder reconstruction. He oversees a multidisciplinary oncology group within the NYU Cancer Institute, focused on development of novel approaches to therapy and prevention. He has been listed among New York Magazine's Best Doctors and Castle and Connolly's America's Top Doctors for Cancer and America's Top Doctors.

Dr. Taneja's clinical research has focused on prostate cancer diagnosis and prevention, including serum markers, biopsy and mapping techniques, and the management of high-risk and recurrent prostate cancer. He has conducted and continues to oversee a number of diagnostic and therapeutic clinical trials in urologic malignancy.

At NYU, Dr. Taneja established and directs the Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Fellowship in Urologic Oncology, serves as the Program Leader of the GU Oncology Program within the NCI-designated NYU Cancer Institute, and is currently the Acting Chief of Urology at the Veterans Administration New York Harbor Healthcare System, Manhattan campus. Dr. Taneja is the current editor of Complications of Urologic Surgery: Diagnosis and Prevention. He has also served as guest editor of several journals and periodicals, written over 100 articles and book chapters, and lectured throughout the world on urologic cancer.
