Since its inception, the leadership of the NYU Center has always aimed to bridge the environmental knowledge gaps among the public by encouraging our Center members to participate in our Community Outreach and Education (COEP) programs relating to environmental health. Our COEP efforts have both expanded and become more focused on achieving the central mission of our COEP efforts: to translate our Center scientists' knowledge and expertise into greater community knowledge and awareness. Our COEP is committed to imparting and sharing knowledge ways best understood by the many populations we work with. To achieve this mission, the specific goals of our Community Outreach and Education Program (COEP) are:
-
Capitalize on and project the NYU-NIEHS Center's scientific expertise into the community to help resolve environmental health issues;
-
Raise awareness of the Center and its availability as a resource; and
-
Enhance the community relevance of the Center's research activities.
The NYU-NIEHS COEP thus seeks to provide a mechanism whereby interaction between the community and scientists can occur, with the underlying objective of improving environmental knowledge, behavior, and, ultimately, health. Our goals are integrated successfully with those of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
