NYU-NIEHS Center members provide science advice to the community and policy makers on an individual basis. Numerous Center members provided impartial pro-bono scientific advice to nearby community groups and policy makers. Thus, the members of this Department have been active in conducting Outreach by participating as scientific advisors, providing informative talks, or by serving on local panels advising the community regarding local environmental issues in the surrounding communities and New York City metropolitan area.
Some examples of how Center Members have imparted scientific advice to the community and policy makers are listed below:
- Dr. Max Costa, Center Director, spoke to the Newburgh, NY Rotary Club about the scientific aspects of local, state, and national environmental problems.
- Drs. Lippmann and Thurston were asked to testify on the appropriateness of the newly proposed standards before committees in both the U.S. House and Senate.
- Dr. Terry Gordon, our Deputy Center Director, was Chairman of the Harriman, NY Community Advisory Panel (CAP), which provides public oversight of a controversial local pharmaceutical plant and its attendant pollutant emissions, from 1998-2001. In 1999, several episodic air pollution releases of nuisance compounds by the plant caused the evacuation of several local schools, including elementary, middle, and high schools in the Monroe-Woodbury School System.
Dr. Thurston provided testimony before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee regarding the adverse health effects of power plants. In September, 1998, at the request of a local planning board in Woodbury, NY, Dr. Thurston also testified regarding the potential health implications of a proposed new commercial mega-mall complex in that community.
