The Otology/Neurotology Fellowship is based upon participation in
the varied aspects of otology/neurotology in the Department of Otolaryngology,
New York University Medical Center. These experiences include research,
participation in the operating room, the cochlear implant project,
teaching medical students and residents, publications and supervising
otology/neurotology clinics.
Research opportunities include the Acoustic Research Laboratory,
the Cochlear Implant and Auditory Brainstem Implant project, numerous
clinical studies and histopathological projects in the Temporal
Bone Laboratory. The Otology Fellow is expected to present a research
paper at a regional/national meeting based upon the above experiences
or an otology/neurotology clinical research project. The faculty
is very busy with national and international meetings and presentations
and the fellow has the opportunity to participate in these events.
The operative experience will include scrubbing in on all otology/neurotology
cases at Bellevue and the Veterans Administration Hospital. The
Fellow will act as supervisor on resident cases where appropriate.
At University Hospital he or she will scrub on selected otology/neurotology/skull
base surgery such as acoustic neuromas, vestibular nerve section,
facial nerve surgery, glomus tumors, and cochlear implants. Chronic
ear surgery and stapes surgery is also frequently performed. Clinical
experience will consist of supervising the otology/neurotology clinics
and in-patient cases at Bellevue and the Veterans Administration
Hospital under the auspices of the attending staff. The opportunity
to participate in the out-patient otology/neurotology practice with
Drs. Roland and Cohen, in the Faculty Practice office will be available.
Teaching responsibilities will include organizing the otology/neurotology
conference in conjunction with the attending and resident staffs,
participating with faculty in temporal bone surgery courses for
the house staff and supervising teaching of temporal bone anatomy
to medical students.
The Fellowship will be funded to allow attendance at postgraduate
courses in a relevant subject. The salary and benefits will be appropriate
for the Fellow's PGY year with fellow/chief resident supplement.
