Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Medical Student Education

NYU Langone’s Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery offers medical students an overview of disorders of the ear, nose, and throat and related structures of the head and neck. Rotations provide experience in our clinics, operating rooms, conferences, and private offices as part of elective courses and subinternships in stage three and stage four of our MD degree curriculum.

During otolaryngology—head and neck surgery rotations, you participate in patient care as part of the resident team, observing and assisting resident and attending physicians with their duties. You complete morning and evening rounds with the house staff and attend weekly grand rounds and resident teaching conferences.

As a student in stage four rotations, you are expected to demonstrate your ability to take a patient history; perform an ear, nose, and throat exam; form an assessment; and develop a patient treatment plan under the supervision of a resident or an attending physician, or both.

In the elective rotations, you complete a one-week rotation at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, and a one-week rotation at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. In subinternship rotations, you complete a two-week rotation at Bellevue and a two-week rotation at Tisch Hospital, or a two-week rotation at Bellevue and one week each at Tisch Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. As part of your rotations at Bellevue, you are expected to prepare and present a short presentation on an otolaryngology-specific topic during morning rounds with the attending physician.

Your performance is regularly evaluated by your chief residents as well as the attending physicians. To earn a grade of “honors,” you must complete all clinical assignments and receive that grade from the chief resident and Max M. April, MD, director of medical student rotations in the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery.

Meet our current residents and fellows.

Underrepresented in Medicine Medical Student Research Internship

NYU Langone’s Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery offers a one-year research internship for underrepresented in medicine (URiM) medical students interested in pursuing scientific investigation in one or more of our subspecialty divisions. Under the mentorship of department faculty, the research intern is guided to pursue basic, clinical, and translational investigations in pediatric otolaryngology, laryngology, neurotology, rhinology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and head and neck surgery as available. The intern manages biomedical research with human subjects reviewed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and animal research that is overseen by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Additional experience includes leading manuscript development for publication and presentation to peers, residents, and faculty during grand rounds and department lectures.
