Message from the Chairman
The Department of Otolaryngology at the New York University is
one of the premier Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery programs
in the country, delivering state of the art patient care, performing
innovative research, and providing superb training in Otolaryngology
and its subspecialties. In addition to NYU Medical Center, the department
holds close affiliation with the Bellevue Hospital, VA Medical Center,
Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.
Clinically, the faculty of the department enjoy a national and
international reputation for providing the highest quality and the
state of the art patient care in all areas of Otolaryngology: facial
plastic and reconstructive surgery, general otolaryngology, head
and neck surgery and oncology, otology, neurotology, skull base
surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, rhinology, laryngology, and professional
voice. The department is the home of the premier NYU Cochlear Implant
Center notable for many firsts including the first center to implant
a multichannel cochlear implant and auditory brainstem implant in
the Northeast; in early 2004, the program was the first to reach
the milestone of having implanted 1000 patients!
The department is also recognized for its cutting edge clinical
and basic science research in head and neck cancer, auditory and
vestibular neuroscience, cochlear implantation, speech and voice
sciences, dysphagia, molecular genetics and gene therapy. Its world
renowned scientists have made seminal contributions that have enhanced
care of patients with diseases of the ear, nose and throat.
Not surprisingly, the outstanding clinical and basic science enterprise
in the department and at NYU offers an outstanding environment for
training of medical students and residents. In addition, there are
fellowships available in Otology & Neurotology, Head and Neck
Surgery and Oncology, and Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery.
The training environment at NYU is rich in its diversity of patient
population, variety of hospital environments and the quality of
its basic science and clinical faculty.
