Course Description:
The Clinical Toxicology course provides a compact review of "need to know" concepts in toxicology management for all healthcare providers, and prepares Specialists in Poison Information to pass the National Certification Exam. In response to suggestions from past participants, we are presenting a new format to provided clinical relevance for all providers and more exam-specific information for those preparing for certification. The workshop schedule offers a selection of case-based topics to best serve each participant's individual clinical needs.
Intended Audience:
This course is intended for all healthcare providers and for Specialists in Poison Information preparing for the National Certification Exam.
Educational Objectives:
- List and define the general management strategies for the poisoned patient, including assessment, toxidrome identification, decontamination and elimination technique.
- Discuss the toxic effects of over the counter preparation such as acetaminophen, aspirin, non-steroidal preparations and iron; state a rational treatment plan for patients presenting with toxic levels.
- List the drugs of abuse, identify symptoms of toxicity and state management guidelines for toxic ingestions.
- Identify four commonly misused/abused prescriptions medications and state signs of toxicity and the appropriate management regimen.
- Discuss the emergency management for overdoses of theophylline, cyclic antidepressants, beta blockers and digoxin.
- Identify six chemical, household and environmental toxins, symptoms of toxicity and state immediate management strategies.
- Relate in a cohesive fashion the material pertinent to the National Certification Exam for Poison Information Specialists and to the accepted standard of care for the poisoned patient.
