Medical Toxicology Course

Each year, NYU Langone’s Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine and the NYC Poison Control Center offer a toxicology course open to healthcare providers from different backgrounds who are interested in learning about the exciting field of medical toxicology.

In 2018, we hosted the very successful Cutting Edge Review Course in Medical Toxicology. Our 2019 course, Toxicology for the Emergency Practitioner, took place March 20 to 22 at the NYC Poison Control Center.

We update our program annually to present essential and extensive reviews of toxicology management. The course objectives and syllabus are likely to change each year to reflect the latest advances in the field.

Course Description

Our three-day medical toxicology course, typically held in the spring, is taught by dynamic faculty from the Department of Emergency Medicine and the NYC Poison Control Center. The course features small-group interactive workshops on gastrointestinal decontamination and toxicology electrocardiograms (EKGs), as well as a high-fidelity simulation session.

Course Objectives

The course is designed to be clinically relevant and enhance learning through a combination of lectures, workshops, and simulation formats.

After completing our last course, for example, clinicians were able to perform the following tasks:

  • critically compare the various gastrointestinal decontamination techniques and identify scenarios in which each is most likely to be beneficial
  • interpret laboratory data and EKGs to assist in the diagnosis and care of the poisoned patient
  • develop an evidence-based approach to the treatment of common and complex toxicological problems
  • synthesize existing evidence to develop a rational approach to the treatment of patients exhibiting excited delirium

How to Enroll

Interested participants can sign up for our annual toxicology course by registering online through NYU Langone’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) program.
