A primary responsibility of the Institutional Animal Care and Use
Committee is the review of investigator's proposals to use laboratory
animals in research. To facilitate this review and expedite activation
of the study, the Animal Protocol Form has been carefully designed
to request all the information required for review by IACUC.
It is of paramount importance that each investigator's protocol(s)
accurately and completely describe the animal work being conducted.
These forms are reviewed not only by the IACUC, but also by inspectors
from the United States Department of Agriculture, the New York State
Department of Health, and the National Institutes of Health (during
site visits). In conjunction with the health of the animals and
the condition of the physical plant, the quality of the IACUC approved
protocols reflects the overall quality of the Medical Center's program
of animal and care use.
