Naming
an Endowed Fund
An
endowed gift is a gift of principal, which is invested by the Universtiy.
The earnings from this investment -- or a portion thereof, at a
distribution rate established from time to time by the Board of
Trustees -- is available for the purpose set forth by the donor.
The current endowment distribution rate is approximately 5% (Thus,
an endowed fund of $100,000 will generate spendable income of about
$5,000 in one year). Earnings in excess of that rate are added back
to the principle. Endowed funds are designated to exist in perpetuity.
Named
Professorship
By
long-standing tradition, special distinction is attached to those
academic posts that are supported by their own funds. For a faculty
member, there is no higher form of recognition for excellence in
academia than appointment to an endowed professorship. Professorships,
as awards to scholars for distinguished accomplishment and service,
carry immense honor and status in the academic medical and scientific
community. The holder is considered not merely in the top echelon
of a particular field, but as an exemplar of the talents and skills
required for preeminence.
In
recognition for establishing an endowed professorship, the name
attached to the professorship, determined by the donor, is linked
in perpetuity with the excellence accompanying the position. All
papers and public and scientific presentations of the professorship
holder bear the name of the donor as do the holder’s stationary
and all references within the NYU School of Medicine literature.
Additionally a formal convocation in full academic attire is held
to establish and recognize the newly created professorship.
Named
Fellowship
Similar
to an endowend professorship, there is a level of recognition, honor
and prestige associated with a junior faculty member holding a named,
endowed fellowship. The Named Fellowship offers its holder a level
of recognition and prestige -- which helps in the recruitment and
retention of highly sought after physicians/scientists in the early
stages of their careers.
