Observership Program in Dermatology
Program
Description
The
Program consists of clinical observations, a formal didactic curriculum,
and optional mentoring in clinical research.
The International
Physician Observer will rotate with our residents through our medical
and specialty dermatology clinics and on the wards of our three
affiliated Hospitals. The Department provides care to over 100,000
patients with skin diseases annually. General Medical and Surgical
Dermatological Clinics are held daily in each hospital. In addition,
there are weekly Specialty Clinics in pediatric dermatology, photomedicine,
contact dermatitis, connective tissue diseases, blistering diseases,
pigmented lesions, cosmetic surgery, leg ulcer, cutaneous lymphoma,
psoriasis, nails, scalp & hair disease, skin of color, Hansen's
disease, sexually transmitted disease, cosmetic dermatology and
Mohs surgery*.
The International
Physician Observer will round on the Dermatology Consult service
at the New York University's Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital,
and the Manhattan Veterans Administration Health Harbor System where
patients are hospitalized with a variety of dermatological conditions.
All three hospitals are adjacent to each other. In addition, International
Physician Observer will be able to visit the practice of private
dermatologist affiliated with the Department. In all cases, the
International Physician Observers will be just that, observers,
and will not provide direct patient care.
The International Physician Observer will participate in the didactic
curriculum of our Department, which includes a formal set of didactic
sessions for the residents in our Training Program. Daily morning
and noon-time sessions include presentations of unusual cases, journal
club, textbook review, dermatopathology, a resident lecture series
and Grand Rounds. The International Physician Observer will also
have the opportunity to interact with our full time and affiliated
faculty, the largest in the United States.
A one-month,
six-month and one year Programs are offered. There is a tuition
fee of $3,000 for the one-month Program, $15,000 for the six-month
Program and $30,000 for the one-year Program. Participants in the
Program will receive a certificate from the Department of Dermatology,
New York University School of Medicine verifying their observership
as an International Dermatology observer.
*This program does not offer immersed exposure
to any of these specialties. Those applicants wishing such should
apply for a dedicated fellowship that is currently not available
through this program.
