Section of Dermatopathology

We provide a wide range of diagnostic services and are committed to educating future experts in the field.

The Section of Dermatopathology in NYU Langone Health’s Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology is one of the nation’s largest and best-known programs of its kind in academic dermatology. Under the leadership of Ata Moshiri, MD, MPH, acting director of the Section of Dermatopathology and NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Dermatopathology Fellowship, the section, with a laboratory accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), provides a wide range of diagnostic services related to the interpretation of skin specimens. We are also committed to providing outstanding patient care and educating future academic and community-based dermatopathologists, dermatology and pathology residents, and medical students.

Dermatopathology Education and Research

Rotations in our general and specialty dermatology clinics provide trainees with exposure to an extraordinary breadth of dermatologic disease, affording numerous opportunities for clinicopathologic correlation. Thousands of glass slides and virtual microscopic images have been accrued over the years and serve as a vast teaching collection.

We also work to advance the understanding of skin disease by pursuing a variety of research endeavors, from case reports and case series to basic and translational research. Examples of current research interests include the use of machine learning for histopathologic diagnosis, the use of learning analytics to investigate the retention of visual subject material, identifying molecular signatures of unusual melanocytic neoplasms, and the characterization of emerging inflammatory dermatoses.
