As an integral part of the NYU Medical Center, the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology fulfills a number of roles. Its educational program provides dermatologic instruction for medical students of the School of Medicine, specialty training for the house staffs of Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center; and advanced training for experienced physicians through the Department of Continuing Medical Education. Through the Charles C. Harris Skin and Cancer Pavilion, the Medical Center's general and specialty clinics and affiliated hospital facilities, the staff members of the Department provide primary and consultative dermatologic care to over 100,000 ambulatory and hospitalized patients yearly. In addition, the faculty members of the Department conduct major research projects aimed at the most significant dermatologic problems of our day.
The Department has among its faculty members many of the world leaders in the field of dermatology. Throughout the history, beginning with its origins as the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital, the Department has upheld a tradition of leadership and excellence that spans the development of dermatology in the United States. Already in the second century of its existence, the Department faces the major challenges of the future of American medicine in its ability to further this tradition.
