DCW MENTORING PROGRAM
In 2004, the Dean's Committee on Women was reinstituted at NYU School of
Medicine under Dean Levin and Joan Ehrlich. One important aspect of this
committee is to address concerns that women medical and graduate students have
here at NYU and to ultimately improve the environment for women students.
In a survey of female medical students completed in 2004, female students overwhelmingly
expressed concern about lack of sufficient female mentorship at NYU SOM and interest
in participating in a mentoring program. To this cause, the Committee developed
a mentoring program at the School of Medicine to facilitate interaction between
female students and female faculty and house staff. Through this program we
aim to provide students with the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships
with female faculty during their time at NYU SOM.
For Faculty:
At the start of each school year, we seek women who are willing to act as mentors
for female students.
Mentors would meet a minimum of once per semester with a student who will contact
her directly. There is no set time or required activity. Volunteering
means being willing to be contacted by a student for questions, a shadowing experience,
or discussion of various issues. Students will be paired with a mentor based on
their field of interest. We hope to have a diverse group of female physicians
involved.
If you are interested in being a mentor and feel you have the time to devote to meeting with a student once per semester at your convenience, we would be grateful if you would contact us. Please include the following in your response:
1-Name
2-Medical specialty
3-Hospital/office
4-Email address
5-Best telephone contact number
6-Preferred method of contact (email/phone/other)
For Students:
At the start of each school year, we pair interested students with female faculty
members or residents based on fields of interest. For this mentoring
program, you will receive the name and contact information for your mentor, and
then you will contact the mentor for a meeting at your convenience. Students
will meet with their mentor at a minimum of once per semester. You may
contact your mentor for questions, a shadowing experience, or discussion of various
issues. We have a diverse group of enthusiastic female physicians involved
who have volunteered to be mentors. We hope that you will take advantage of
this opportunity to interact with the faculty on one-to-one basis. Again,
participation in this program is voluntary and open to personal shaping and experience. We
hope that you will consider participating in this mentoring program while you develop
the knowledge and skills to become the next generation of women physicians.
If you are interested in participating in the mentoring program and would like to be paired with a mentor, please contact us and supply the following information:
1- Name
2- Email address
3- Phone number
4- Medical interests (if known)
5- Do you have an interest in research? If yes, specify clinical or basic
science research
