Carol Bernstein, MD, Chair of the DCW, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Vice Chair for Education in Psychiatry and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. Carol Bernstein has been Chair of the Dean’s Committee on Women since 2004. She completed the Executive Leadership Program in Academic Medicine (ELAM) as well as the Physician Leadership Development Program at NYU. She is also the DIO (Designated Institutional Official) for all of the ACGME activities at NYU School of Medicine. She is active in many national professional organizations and was recently elected Vice President of the American Psychiatric Association. Besides her academic responsibilities, Dr. Bernstein maintains a private practice in Psychiatry in Manhattan, is married to a psychiatrist, and is the mother of a ten year old daughter.
Felice B. Aull, PhD, MA, Associate Professor of Physiology and Neuroscience. Felice Aull has actively advocated for women students and faculty at NYUSOM for many years. Most of her current teaching and research is in medical humanities -- the application of humanities, social sciences, and arts to medical education and training.
Virginia H. Black, PhD, Associate Professor of Cell Biology, Vice President of the School of Medicine Faculty Council, University Senator representing the School of Medicine, Chair of the Faculty Senators Council, active member of several scientific societies. Virginia Black contributes to the development and teaching of the Cells, Tissues and Organs Module (histology and endocrinology), serves as editor of the syllabus “Cell Biology of Tissues and Organs”, and is a mentor in the Lewis Thomas Society Masters Scholars Program.
Stephanie V. Blank, MD, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Bellevue Hospital. Stephanie Blank is actively involved in clinical practice, translational research and trials, teaching and mentoring.
Bani Chandler, MD, PGY-2 in Internal Medicine (bc525@med.nyu.edu). Bani Chandler graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a major in English in 2002. She is the past AAMC student liaison to the Women in Medicine Committee, past co-president of the NYU chapter of AMWA and past co-coordinator of the DCW Mentoring Program.
Joan Cangiarella, MD, Associate Professor and Vice-Chair of Clinical Operations in the Department of Pathologyy. Joan Cangiarella is one of nine cytopathologists with specialized training in aspiration biopsy. Her interests include pathology of the breast and the use of fine needle aspiration biopsy in the diagnosis of diseases of the breast. She has served as a mentor to female medical student for the last several years.
Susan De Santi, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Administrative Director of the Center for Brain Health, Millhauser Laboratories. Susan De Santi's research is in brain imaging (PET and MRI) and cognition in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease and entails looking for early markers of the disease. As the administrative director, she oversees all research studies and supervises research and clinical staff.
Kathel Dunn, MSLS, Associate Director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region. Kathel Dunn is responsible for the daily operations of a 5-year government contract to provide training, outreach and enhance awareness of health information, particularly that of the National Library of Medicine, its products and services. She is interested in fostering collaborative relationships amongst libraries and between libraries and community-based organizations.
Joan Ehrlich, JD, Assistant Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs. Joan Erlich is a lawyer by training and has worked in the Office of Education, Faculty and Academic Affairs since August 2001.
Elizabeth Gurney, medical student, Class of 2010 (eg1063@med.nyu.edu). Liz Gurney graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Vagelos Program in the Molecular Life Sciences in 2006. She is currently Patient Scheduler and Steering Committee Member of the New York City Free Clinic, Shadowing Coordinator for NYU’s chapter of Medical Students for Choice, and President of the Sexual Health Advocacy Group at NYU.
Marianne T. Guschwan, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry (marianne.guschwan@med.nyu.edu). Marianne Guschwan is Board Certified in General Adult Psychiatry as well as Addiction Psychiatry. She works in clinical research at NYU, has a part-time private practice, and is Involved in mentoring junior medical school faculty across the country on improving teaching skills.
Karen Hendricks-Muñoz, MD, MPH, Associate Chair of Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Neonatology, Director of the NYU Regional Perinatal Center, Director of the NYU Fellowship Traiing Program in Neonatology-Perinatal Medicine, Co-Chair of the Dean's Council for Diversity.
Jane Henehan, Administrative Assistant, Office of Faculty and Academic Affairs (Jane.Henehan@nyumc.org). Jane Henehan provides staff support to the DCW and encourages others to get involved in this effort.
Mary Ann Hopkins, MD, M.Phil, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Director of the Surgical Clerkship. Mary Ann Hopkins is a general surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic and trauma surgery. Her special areas of interest are medical education and international humanitarian aid. She also volunteers with the organization Doctors Without Borders where she has worked in war torn countries such as Sri Lanka, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Lynn Jacobs, MS Ed, Director, Organizational Development and Learning (Lynn.Jacobs@nyumc.org). Lynn Jacobs has worked in healthcare for the past 25 years – at Mount Sinai Medical Center, MSNYU Health, and now full time at NYU Medical Center.
Lois A. Katz, MD, Professor of Medicine. Lois Katz is the Women’s Liaison Officer for NYU School of Medicine to the Association of American Medical Colleges. She has been working with and advocating for women medical students and faculty at NYU and elsewhere for many years. She is an internist and nephrologist with a special interest in hypertension who works full-time at the VA where she is Associate Chief of Staff for Special Emphasis Programs and Quality Management.
Ana C. Krieger, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Director of the NYU Sleep Disorders Center and Program Director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship. Ana Krieger is involved in Women Faculty Professional Development sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Besides her academic responsibilities, Dr. Krieger has been committed to supporting four foster children overseas for the past 8 years and has a three-year-old son.
Karen G. Langer, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, Supervisor of Inpatient Psychology Services, Rusk Institute. Karen Langer's practice activities focus on disability and rehabilitation. She has edited a text on psychotherapy with brain injury and stroke and is also involved in patient care, education and mentoring, and interdisciplinary team collaboration.
Dolores Malaspina, MD, MSPH, Chair of Psychiatry, Anita and Joseph Steckler Professor of Psychiatry. A physician scientist, Dolores Malaspina holds Master's degrees in zoology and epidemiology and has trained in psychiatric genetics. She was the first person to identify paternal germline changes as an important factor for increasing schizophrenia risk and has received numerous awards from the American Psychiatric Association, NARSAD (National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression), NIH and other organizations for her scientific accomplishments and for mentoring the careers of young scientists.
Joni Rabiner, MD, PGY-2 in Pediatrics (jer272@med.nyu.edu). Joni Rabiner graduated from Cornell University in 2002 and NYU School of Medicine in 2006. During medical school at NYU, she was actively involved in Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) and helped to start the DCW Mentoring Program.
Nirit Rosenblum, MD, Assistant Professor Of Urology, Associate Director of Urology at Bellevue Hospital Center. As a woman in a field largely dominated by male physicians, Nirit Rosenblum am fortunate to have found a special niche within urology, serving female patients with a wide range of urologic problems. She is committed to attracting more women into the field and subspecialty and is actively involved in the fellowship program in female urology, urodynamics and pelvic reconstructive surgery.
Ariel Samuelson, medical student, Class of 2010 (as3959@med.nyu.edu). Ariel Samuelson graduated from Tufts University in 2006. She is currently treasurer of the Harm Reduction Alliance, secretary of the Publication of Research on Biomedical Endeavors (PROBE) club, a student research publication and the student representative for the DCW Mentoring Program.
Nancy Sanchez, Vice President for Total Compensation and HR Business Partner for NYU School of Medicine (sanchn01@med.nyu.edu). Nancy Sanchez has been at the Medical Center for almost 24 years, assuming a progressive number of leadership roles within Human Resources in each of the subspecialties. She is currently responsible for overseeing the HR functions of Compensation and Benefits for the Medical School, NYU Hospitals Center and the Hospital for Joint Diseases. She holds a dual appointment as the Business Partner for the Medical School and is responsible for ensuring that HR objectives within the Medical School are facilitated by the services offered by all areas of Human Resources.
Maria Shiau, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology, Division of Thoracic Imaging. Maria Shiau is actively involved in medical student and radiology resident education, teaching and mentoring. Current projects include integration of radiology into the 1st year anatomy course and coordinating radiology book clubs for the junior radiology residents.
Janice Tobia, Manager, Office of Faculty Records (Janice.Tobia@nyumc.org). Janice Tobia has been at NYU for 27 years. She is Manager of the Faculty Records Office for the School of Medicine and considers the committee a great opportunity to make a difference for all women at NYU Medical Center.
Cristina Vieira, MD, PGY-4 in Radiology (vieirc01@med.nyu.edu). Cristina Vieira graduated from Harvard College in 2000 with a degree in Romance Languages and Literature and from Harvard Medical School in 2004 (Health, Sciences, and Technology Pathway, combined Harvard-MIT program). She is currently a junior chief resident in the NYU radiology program.
Synphen Wu, MD/PhD student (wus06@med.nyu.edu). Synphen Wu graduated from Stanford University in 2001. She was a past co-chair of the NYU chapters of the Harm Reduction Alliance and the LGBT People in Medicine group and is currently doing her graduate thesis work in molecular neuroscience.
