Overview of the Disease

By Federico Steiner, M.D.

Cancers of the colon, breast, kidneys, soft tissue (sarcomas), prostate, skin, head and neck, certain childhood tumors and others types can spread to the lungs, a process also known as pulmonary metastasis. These tumors may spread to the lungs through the blood, lymphatic system, or by direct invasion.

Although this may represent an advanced form of disease, certain groups of patients can achieve long-term survival through different treatment modalities.

We encourage patients and their families to contact the Thoracic Oncology Program at NYU Medical Center, as well as other treatment centers that specialize in pulmonary metastasis, to compare medical opinions, learn the newest diagnostic and treatment options and make an informed decision about care.
