NYU Medical Center is part of the International Early Lung Cancer Action Project (I-ELCAP), the leading group performing clinical trials to screen lung cancer in high risk individuals.
I-ELCAP screens for cancer through the following procedures:
Computerized Tomography (CT) to screen for cancer. Over 30,000 CT scans have been performed.
Examining sputum to look for abnormal cells. If abnormal cells are found, a procedure known as a bronchoscopy is performed to examine the airway and find the source of the cells. At NYU Medical Center, specialized fluorescence bronchoscopes (link to new technologies) are being used for this purpose.
