Immediately following surgery, you will be admitted to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and monitored for 24 hours.
The following day, you will be moved to the step-down unit for a day or two, and then transferred to a regular room.
For 3 to 5 days after surgery, you will be kept on a feeding tube (NPO - nothing by mouth) and receive a barium esophagram to assess your anastomosis. Once you have been cleared, you may take liquids.
Approximately 7 to 10 days after surgery you will be discharged to return home.
