Research Activities:

Ongoing Basic research: etiology and pathogenesis of vein graft intimal hyperplasia and the vascular response to injury. Ongoing studies are evaluating the mechanistic roles of intracellular signalling pathways (Ras, Jnk, ERK and P38), MMP’s, and inflammatory mediators in the intimal hyperplasia and vascular restenosis (PI).

Ongoing Preclinical studies for design, development and evaluation of minimally invasive cardiac surgery systems (Co-PI).

Ongoing Knottless connectors and auto-securing anastomotic devices for cardiac surgery and valve replacement. Pre-clinical design and development progress (Co-PI).

Ongoing Clinical outcomes trial on a new mechanical heart valve (PI).

Ongoing Clinical outcomes trials for outcomes analysis of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Principle investigator of the Port-Access International Registry. Established a prospective NYU database, now with more than 2000 minimally invasive valve patients. Ongoing trials are in progress (PI).

Ongoing Clinical outcomes trials to evaluate the efficacy of mitral valve reconstruction. Established prospective NYU database, now with more than 2500 valve repair patients. Ongoing trials are in progress (Co-PI).

Ongoing Clinical outcomes trials to evaluate the efficacy of thoracic aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection repair. Developed NYU clinical database, with ongoing trials are in progress (PI).

1996-1998 The role of intracellular calcium overload in neonatal myocardium rapid cooling contracture. These studies involved in vivo studies using load independent indices of cardiac function and in vitro studies with isolated myocardial cells (co-investigator).

1994-1998 Systemic inflammatory response syndrome secondary to extracorporeal circulation (PI).

1994-1996 The role of sterol 27-Hydroxylase in vascular atherosclerosis (co-investigator).

1990-1992 BARI trial: NIH sponsored randomized trial comparing coronary artery bypass grafting and angioplasty (co-investigator).

1985-1990 Myocardial protection and strategies for reperfusion of ischemic myocardium. Studies included evaluating the relative roles of mechanical left ventricular unloading and substrate enhancement to minimize reperfusion damage (PI).
