Media reports about the use of minimally invasive cardiac surgical techniques and technology have, at times, explored the controversies within the medical community, and, at times, detailed the dramatic impact that these techniques have on people's lives. Even as the debate continues, scientific and clinical research is breaking new ground every day, using these techniques as a platform. We pioneered one of them, called port-access, more than five years ago in our lab and now it is the preferred method for virtually all our patients with heart valve disease. With nearly 1,000 of these cases as our guide, we will soon launch the first U.S. clinical trial of robotic-assisted mitral valve surgery which we believe will help us achieve optimal results with minimal patient discomfort and recovery time.
