Physician Referral
The consultative services offered by the NYU Center for Cardiovascular
Disease Prevention can be easily arranged through physician referral.
A request can be made for a patient to see any one of our attendings.
Alternatively, we can make arrangements based on patient convenience
and availability of a faculty member.
We would be happy to discuss an individual case prior to consultation
to determine the best approach for each evaluation. Patients should
also expect to have at least one visit with our nutritionist. It is
increasingly clear that utilizing the correct diet is critical to
the success of intervention designed to reduce cardiac risk, as reflected
by the Adult Treatment Panel III recommendations as well as by the
FDA-approved prescribing information for the major hypolipidemic agents.
We will also be utilizing the services of an experienced nurse clinician
who will participate in patient follow-up and assessment of response
to lifestyle modification and drug therapies.
Typically, a consultation will last sixty minutes and will take place place in our new, state-of-the-art faculty practice suite located at Skirball 9U, 530 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016. This
will involve a thorough directed history and physical examination.
Based on the nature of any available blood tests or cardiac risk evaluations,
additional procedures are likely to be requested. This could include
more thorough and specific lipid tests to determine lipoprotein particle
number and size, which are done at the laboratory that has served
as the core lab for many of the large national multicenter studies
conducted over the last few years (Liposcience labs in North Carolina).
After consultation with the referring physician, it may be decided
to be useful to obtain other tests such as an Exercise or Pharmacologic
Stress test, using Nuclear Scintigraphy or Echocardiogram imaging.
Another likely test may include High Sensitivity B-Mode Carotid Ultrasound
to measure Intimal Medial Thickening. The features of this test and
data concerning the rationale for its use are offered through this
link.
