A major goal of the NYU Cardiac & Vascular Institute is to provide medical students and house staff with interdisciplinary training, reflecting the shifting technological and clinical focus of cardiovascular medicine. Medical students and house staff at all training levels benefit from experience and training in a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to these diseases. Our programs attract physicians-in-training, physicians, researchers, and other healthcare professionals from the world over.
These pages provide more information on specific education and training programs related to cardiovascular disease at NYU Medical Center:
Cardiac Rehabilitation Rehabilitation is an integral part of care for many patients being treated for cardiovascular disease. Through the Joan and Joel Smilow Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, attending physicians, residents and fellows, medical students, and rehabilitation staff work together to assure state-of-the-art medical education and patient care. Special classes and workshops are available for practicing physicians. Training in the allied health professions (such as physical and occupational therapy) is also available.
Cardiology Training Program (Department of Medicine)
The Cardiology Section of the Department of Medicine offers a three-year training program. The training sites include Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, and the Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System. This remarkable array provides extraordinary diversity to our fellowship programs. Fourth-year programs in specific areas are available by application to the laboratory director. Application Form.
Cardiothoracic Surgery
Training in cardiothoracic surgery is offered through NYU's Surgical Residency Training Program -- a major academic responsibility of the Department of Surgery.

Noninvasive Cardiology Laboratory
The Noninvasive Cardiology laboratory provides training to medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as physicians from all over the world, in the applications of such technologies as echocardiography and electrocardiography. Fellows can receive additional specialized training in echocardiography and other noninvasive techniques. The lab also collaborates with the Department of Radiology to provide specialized training in the use of magnetic resonance imaging in cardiology. For more information on training opportunities, contact the laboratory at 212-263-5664.
Pediatric Cardiology
Comprehensive training is offered in all aspects of modern pediatric cardiology, including structured instruction in basic and clinical research. A fourth or fifth year of protected training is available for selected individuals with interests in various sub-disciplines, such as electrophysiology, imaging, or basic research.
Vascular Surgery
The Division of Vascular Surgery offers a two-year clinical fellowship for four vascular residents in the specialty of vascular surgery. This program provides training for residents in all aspects of vascular surgery, for insuring the highest quality of care for patients with vascular illnesses, and for maintaining an environment suitable to host academic activities for medical student education and scientific research. The curriculum includes rotations in clinical vascular surgery, vascular laboratory, endovascular surgery, and interventions. For more information, contact the Division of Vascular Surgery at 212-263-7311.
