Colon Cancer is treated both with a conventional “open” technique
and laparoscopically. While the data is maturing on the oncologic benefits
of the laparoscopic technique this is certainly an excellent option to offer
patients for benign disease such as polyps, diverticulitis, Ulcerative Colitis,
Familial Polyposis, Rectal Prolapse, Slow Transit Constipation and others.
It is also an excellent option for incisional hernias. Laparoscopic surgery
has the benefit of less postoperative pain, faster return of bowel function,
faster return to work and lower rates of adhesions, and hernias. Likewise,
the same techniques can be applied for rectal cancers. With these we also offer
the options of transanal excision or fulgaration.
We also have a high volume practice in benign anorectal disease. We treat
hemorrhoids with techniques such as rubber band ligation, PPH stapling, laser
surgery, Sclerotherapy and surgical excision. We treat fissures, Pilonidal
cysts, Condyloma, Abscesses and Fistulas.
We see a large number of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, Refractory
Constipation and Incontinence. We also perform a large number of Flexible Sigmoidoscopies
and colonoscopies for evaluation of symptoms and for screening for colorectal
cancer, a procedure that everyone over 50 years old and younger patients at
high risk should have.
