A promising new treatment for hemorrhoids is now being
offered by our practice. The Procedure for
Prolapse and Hemorrhoids (PPH)
is an exciting new development in the treatment of internal hemorrhoids
and mucosal prolapse. It promises to be as effective as conventional
surgery but with little post-operative pain and a much shorter recovery
period.
It
is a new, minimally invasive technique currently offered by only a few other
surgeons in New York. There is no preparation necessary for the procedure.
It is done as an outpatient with sedation so that there is no discomfort during
the procedure. Most patients feel little to no pain afterwards, are able to
immediately resume a regular diet, and to return to work the next day. There
even seems to be a lower complication rate afterwards as compared to the conventional
surgery.
It is currently indicated for patients with second degree hemorrhoids
after failure of rubber band treatment, third and fourth degree hemorrhoids
and rectal mucosal prolapse. Like any procedure, it is not without risk,
though the risks are similar to that for conventional hemorrhoid surgery.
It is not the best treatment for every patient, but for some patients
it is a much better option. To find out if the PPH procedure is right
for you an exam and consultation with Dr. Harlin or Dr. Brandeis should
be arranged.
