Our Approach to Treating

Concussion

Doctors provide expert diagnosis and treatment to children and adults with concussion at the Concussion Center. The center brings together clinicians from a wide range of specialties, including neurology and neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, orthopedic sports medicine, emergency medicine, and neuropsychology. Care of children with concussions is provided through Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone. These specialists manage all aspects of recovery from concussion, help people and their families to cope with lingering effects, and offer recommendations about returning to sports, school, work, and other activities.

A person with a head injury should be treated immediately in an emergency room. You can also call the Concussion Center’s toll-free number—855-NYU-2220—between 7:00AM and 8:00PM, Monday through Friday, to speak with one of the center’s highly trained nurses, who can determine whether you need emergency care or an appointment with one of our clinicians. Our concussion referral specialists ensure that you are seen in a timely manner and match you with the appropriate physician.

Treatment for Concussion

Our experts closely monitor children and adults after sustaining a concusion. They typically recommend an initial treatment of physical and mental rest, prescribing medications when needed to manage the symptoms of a concussion. NYU Langone also offers rehabilitation services to address any persistent physical or cognitive difficulties.
