NYU Medical Center Awarded Magnet Status for Excellence in Nursing

New York, April 5, 2005 - NYU Medical Center received confirmation today that the Medical Center has received the prestigious Magnet Award for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.  Only two percent of the hospitals in the country have earned this coveted award.

Independently sponsored research shows that Magnet facilities have positive outcomes for nurses and patients alike. Magnet hospitals have lower mortality rates, shorter lengths of stay, increased patient satisfaction, and increased retention and recruitment rates among nurses.

According to Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, "Magnet recognition provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care they can expect to receive."  Magnet status is awarded for four years and Magnet lapel pins are distributed to the institution's staff as emblems of their achievement.

Achieving this award of excellence involved a long, complex application and review process that began in the fall of 2002.  "The award culminates a journey that began with the strong nursing reputation that NYU Medical Center has held for decades," said Dr. Bowar-Ferres, Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer at NYU Medical Center.

The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, in 1994. Its goal is to recognize healthcare organizations that provide outstanding nursing care and also create an environment that attracts and retains outstanding nurses.
