NYU School of Medicine Celebrates Commencement 2006

NEW YORK, May 11, 2006 - On the morning of May 11, 155 students from NYU School of Medicine’s graduating class of 2006 gathered with family and friends at New York University’s 174th Commencement Ceremony in Washington Square Park, where Dean Robert M. Glickman, M.D., administered the Hippocratic Oath. This rite of passage marked the first step into their new lives as physicians.

That afternoon, the graduates moved on to Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall for the School’s own Graduation Ceremony, which was led by Dean Glickman. The keynote address was given by Eugene Braunwald, M.D., ’52, Distinguished Hersey Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and Chairman of the TIMI Study Group at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Other distinguished participants included John Sexton, President of New York University, and Kenneth Langone, Chairman of the NYU School of Medicine Foundation Board of Trustees.

This year’s graduates embody the finest traditions of the School. A full 80 percent have already done independent research! Eleven students earned degrees with honors, while eight earned a combined M.D./Ph.D. and seven completed an M.D./M.P.H. The Class of 2006 is also distinguished by how many of its members have devoted hours of time, skills, and energy to community service projects.

Other events included a dinner-dance on May 9 and an awards ceremony on May 10, which honored 46 students for their high levels of academic performance, outstanding leadership skills, and special commitment to service, as well as three faculty members, Dr. Joseph Sean Cavanaugh; Dr. David S. Goldfarb; and, Dr. David E. Seubert for their extraordinary intellectual mentorship.
