Howard Leslie Weiner M.D.
Howard Leslie Weiner M.D.
Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics
Clinical Responsibilities
Dr. Weiner is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics at the NYU School of Medicine, and is the youngest faculty member in his Department to have received tenure at the medical school. He is extremely proud of having been in the NYU Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, as Dr. Jeffrey Wisoff's partner, for the last 10 years. Most recently, he was thrilled to welcome Dr. David Harter as the third partner in their growing program, which is the largest of its kind in the New York area. As a pediatric neurosurgeon with particular expertise in the surgical treatment of childhood epilepsy, Dr. Weiner works closely with the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center as the pediatric epilepsy surgeon. This collaboration has been one the most rewarding and enjoyable aspects of his career. As a result, he has developed one of the largest modern experiences in the surgical treatment of young children with medically refractory epilepsy, with a national and international referral base. In the laboratory, he is studying brain development and, specifically, the role of the Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathway in formation of a childhood brain tumor, medulloblastoma. More recently, he has begun to study the science of epilepsy in Tuberous Sclerosis complex. His tumor work has been funded by an NIH research grant, and he has authored over 60 publications to date. Dr. Weiner received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year, and was one of three graduating seniors who received the Dean's Scholar Award for highest academic standing in his class. He earned his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, where he received the John Metcalf Polk Prize for graduating with highest academic standing in his class, as well as Alpha Omega Alpha in his junior year. Dr. Weiner arrived at NYU as a surgical intern in 1989 and then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at NYU. In 1996, he was awarded the Van Wagenen Fellowship by the AANS, the Rhodes Scholarship of neurosurgery, and the premier award granted to a graduating neurosurgery resident.
