Harold Van Bosse M.D.
Clinical Responsibilities
Dr. van Bosse has been practicing pediatric orthopaedic surgery exclusively since completing his orthopaedic residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1994, and his fellowship at Toronto?s Hospital for Sick Children in 1995. Initially his practice was affiliated with Schneider Children's Hospital of Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In 1998 he joined the staff at the NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases. Dr. van Bosse enjoys treating the entire realm of pediatric orthopaedic surgery, but has a special interest in limb deformity, neuromuscular diseases, and pediatric spine deformities. He has extensive experience with external fixators, using them to correct upper extremity and lower extremity deformities and limb length inequalities. He has performed pioneering work in the treatment of knee contractures in children with arthrogryposis, and severe residual clubfoot deformities, using Ilizarov external fixators. A large part of his practice is devoted to patients with cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, and various muscular dystrophies. Dr. van Bosse enjoys both the surgical and non-surgical management of these special patients. He also has a substantial practice treating children with spine deformities. These are primarily treated by non-surgical means, but he has a busy surgical schedule of patients who need operative correction of their deformities. Dr. van Bosse has been instrumental in bringing the VEPTR device (or "Titanium Rib") to New York City. The VEPTR device is used to treat chest wall constriction due to rib and spine deformities in infants and young children. Dr. van Bosse is co-founder and co-director of the Hospital for Joint Diseases' Clubfoot Center, dedicated to the Ponseti technique. The Ponseti technique is a method of casting clubfeet to obtain a better correction of the deformity, and at the same time, avoid intensive surgery. The Center's trend-setting work has been the subject of a number of research presentation at national meetings. Dr. van Bosse's specialty interests in arthrogryposis and Prader-Willi syndrome have led to considerable experience and expertise in treating these conditions. He is frequently consulted on patients not only from the tri-state area, but nationally and internationally as well.
