Departments of Radiology (Radiology-Fac) and Physiology and Neuroscience
Member of NYU Radiology Associates
Member of NYU Radiology Associates
Clinical Responsibilities
Having received a Ph.D. in medical engineering at Oxford University, U.K, while as a Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Lee earned her medical degree with honors at Harvard Medical School. She was a General Surgery Resident from 1992 to 1993 and then completed her residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Duke University, where she served as Chief Resident. She joined NYU as a fellow in Body and Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in 1997 and joined the faculty in 1998. In 2002, she became the Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Radiology and is now Professor of Radiology, Physiology and Neuroscience. In July 2007, she was appointed Vice-Dean for Science, Senior Vice-President and Chief Scientific Officer for New York University Medical Center. During her tenure as Vice-Chair for Research in Radiology, the Radiology Department enjoyed a tremendous growth in research, numbering over 20 full-time research scientists in a Research Division comprising over 60 members. According to NIH reports, which combine research funding of the Departments of Radiology and Radiation Oncology, NYU moved from #43 in ranking in 2000 to #15 in 2004. In a recently published report which analyzed NIH funding for Radiology Departments separate from Radiation Oncology, NYU Radiology ranked #9 in the nation. Research scientists in the department have published over 350 peer-reviewed manuscripts in the past 5 years. Dr. Lee's primary areas of focus as Vice-Chair have been (1) recruitment of outstanding junior research scientists, (2) oversight for the development of a cutting edge research facility, the Center for Biomedical Imaging, (3) development of a strong team of research administrative staff and operating procedures, (4) establishment of a range of resources, tools, and programs to foster research in the department, (5) promotion of close collaborations between basic science and clinical investigators within the department as well as exploration of collaborative potential with outside departments, including NYU downtown, and (6) emphasis on training of clinical fellows, residents, and medical students. Currently the principal investigator on two R01 grants from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Lee's primary area of interest is in the development of quantitative MRI techniques to quantify renal function and diagnose renal disease noninvasively. Her group concentrates on renovascular disease and renal transplant dysfunction. She serves as a charter member of the Medical Imaging NIH study section and frequently reviews on other sections as an ad hoc member. Her other research interests span the fields of body and cardiovascular MRI. Elected to the Board of Trustees of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 2002, she chaired the Scientific Program Committee for the Annual Meeting in May 2005 and was recently elected to be the Vice-President of the Society. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography and reviews for many of the leading journals in her field. She is author of over 100 research publications and a new textbook, Cardiovascular MRI: Physical Principles to Practical Protocols (Lippincott, 2006). She has served as Visiting Professor and lectured around the world, for which she has been recognized with teaching awards. Among her other awards include NYU's Orloff Award in 2001 in recognition of her research contributions and election to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. In 2006, she elected a Fellow of the ISMRM and was named in Crains New York Business magazine's "40 under 40" New York's Rising Stars. Most recently, Dr. Lee completed an M.B.A. at NYU's Stern School of Business.
