Clinical Responsibilities
Dr. Hendricks-Mu?oz was recruited to the Department of Pediatrics as Director of Neonatology, in 1990. Dr. Hendricks-Mu?oz attended medical school and school of public health at Yale University School of Medicine in 1978 receiving her MD and Masters in Public Health in Maternal Fetal Medicine. She subsequently completed her residency in pediatrics at Yale and her post doctorate training in Neonatology at the University Of Rochester School Of Medicine, Rochester, NY. In 1984 she was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and in 1986 Clinical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester New York. She served for two years at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Fl as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics caring for children in the NICU and pursuing research endeavors in chronic lung disease, for which she received NIH and American Lung Association funding prior to joining the faculty at New York University Medical Center. Dr. Hendricks-Mu?oz received Tenure in 1996. Since her arrival at New York University, Dr. Hendricks-Mu?oz reorganized the Division of Neonatology. She has been voted America's Best Pediatrician and New York's Best Doctor in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine annually since 2001. At the clinical level she reorganized Tisch and Bellevue Hospital Regional Perinatal Centers recruiting several Neonatologists and altered the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit such that it provides care to critically ill neonates in a family centered and developmentally appropriate manner. The NICU=s are both designated Regional Perinatal Centers with a total of 54 Neonatal Intensive Care beds, 29 at Tisch Hospital NICU and 25 at Bellevue Hospital Center. The Regional Perinatal Centers provide intensive care to over 950 admissions annually. The NICU at Tisch Hospital was ranked #1 in University Health care for the premature infant in 2001 through University Healthcare Consortium and the NICU at Bellevue Hospital received the National Association of Public Hospital Award for outstanding outcome for premature infants. In 1992, Dr. Hendricks-Mu?oz established the Neonatal Comprehensive Continuing Care Program a multidisciplinary follow-up program for children who have been in the Neonatal Intensive care to provide early intervention, parental education and parental support uniquely beginning care in the NICU and continuing until age five. Together with the Family Centered Care and Developmental Care program established in 1997 as well as the Infant Apnea/SIDS Program, premature infant outcome has become a major focus and excels at NYU and Bellevue Hospitals.
