Clinical Responsibilities
Samoon Ahmad, MD, is Clinical Associate Professor in Psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine in New York, New York. He also serves as an Attending Psychiatrist at Tisch Hospital in the New York University Langone Medical Center. Dr. Ahmad's additional academic involvement includes his work as Program Director for the Comprehensive Review of Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders and Psychopharmacology Annual Review as well as Co-Director for the Grand Rounds Curriculum Committee.
Dr. Ahmad earned his medical degree from Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan, where he trained in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Cardiology. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at the New York University Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. Dr. Ahmad is a Member of the American Medical Association, International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, Member Board of Governors Bellevue Psychiatric Society and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and he holds licenses in both New York and Connecticut. Dr. Ahmad's clinical and research interest includes Endocrine Disorders in the mentally ill. He is the Principal Investigator of a large study (3500 patients) looking at the prevalence of Metabolic Abnormalities in the Chronically Mentally Ill in the Inpatient setting at Bellevue Hospital / NYU Medical Center.
Dr. Ahmad's other accomplishments include his work with the survivors of the 2005 Earthquake in Kashmir and Pakistan studying the coping mechanisms and related post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Ahmad conducted video interviews with survivors and caregivers so that the resulting video could create awareness and exposure to the plight of children and adults in the region. The 18 minute documentary (The Wrath of God ; A Faith-Based Survival Paradigm) has been shown numerous times since its completion and was presented at the ISTSS conference in Los Angeles, November 2006. Dr. Ahmad filmed, wrote and directed the movie himself. This movie was shown in Dec 2006 at the Grand Rounds in the department of Psychiatry at NYU and since then has been shown nationally and internationally. For this work he is recipient of the " Frank Ochberg Award for Media and Trauma Study " given by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. This award recognizes significant contributions by clinicians and researchers on the relationship of media and trauma.
He is also the Contributing Editor to Kaplan & Sadock's Pocket Handbook of Clinical Psychiatry, Kaplan and Sadock?s Concise Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (First Edition). and a Consulting Editor to Kaplan & Sadock's Concise Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry.
