Cancer Awareness Network for Immigrant Minority Populations
(CANIMP)

Information about our Immigrant Cancer Portal Project

Our Mission

The Center for Immigrant Health (CIH), in conjunction with the NYU Cancer Institute of the NYU School of Medicine, established a Cancer Awareness Network for Immigrant Minority Populations (CANIMP) in 2000.

This project focuses on building bridges between immigrant communities and cancer researchers in the areas of:

  • Lung Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Breast Cancer
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Oral Cancer
  • Cervical Cancer

The National Cancer Institute of the NIH funded CANIMP as a Special Populations Network to respond to the disparities in utilization and participation of immigrants and minorities in cancer prevention, detection and treatment services. CANIMP has developed a network to embrace and inform immigrant communities via trusted community-based organizations and ethnic media appropriate to culture and linguistics.

Our Goals

(1) Enhance immigrant awareness of, and participation in, cancer prevention, detection, and research activities;

(2) Facilitate informed choices about treatment options through increased awareness of prevention, detection, and treatment options for lung, prostate, breast and cervical cancer; and

(3) Stimulate community-based minority researchers and providers to develop and participate in cancer research.
