The research team at the Center for Brain Health (CBH) is committed to improving the understanding the biological basis (cause) of Alzheimer’s disease. To this aim we have introduced and published many new and innovative diagnostic tests using MRI, PET, and CSF and plasma measurements to reveal the disease signature. These research modalities have enabled us to identify biological changes in brain many years prior to symptoms. Many have proved to be valuable predictors of future memory failure and a diagnosisi of AD. These modalities have also enabled us to identify two new possible mechanisms for AD; a maternally transmitted increased risk for the brain pathology of AD, and a vascular dysfunction caused by a fragment of amyloid that is detected in the blood. It is our immediate goal to continue to both develop new treatments and use approved drugs so as to avert disease progression by protecting the brain.
