Theory construction
Incorporating the knowledge gained during the development of the anesthesia monitor, together with the results obtained in animal and human research on brain activity during cognitive tasks of single cells, multiunit ensembles, ERPs and EEG at BRL and other neurobiological laboratories, Dr. John has developed a Theory of Consciousness published June 2005 in Progress in Brain Research
Systematic thorough investigation of the QEEG database constructed in the development of the Anesthesia Monitor, in normal subjects and patients undergoing general anesthesia during surgeries, also led to the development of a theory of anesthesia. This theory published in 2005, as the lead article in the journal Anesthesia, was the first physiological theory of general anesthesia since the early 1900s.
