Werner Doyle, M.D. is an Associate Professor Neurosurgery at NYU Medical Center performing all the Epilepsy surgeries in adolescents and adults. His undergraduate study was in Mathematics and this was followed by obtaining an MD from College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia Univ., New York, NY. After 2 years of General Surgery residency he pursued neuroscience training. During 1984-1985 he was an NIH Research Fellow involved in Medical Imaging, studying Positron Emission Tomagraphy scan applications to the central nerves system at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, CA. From 1986 to 1991 he re-entered clinical training in Neurosurgery at New York University Medical Center, New York. NY. Following residency he went on to complete an Epilepsy Surgery Fellowship at Yale Medical School, New Haven, CT and accepted the invitation to return to NYU Dept of Neurosurgery as a faculty member in 1993. He was Director of Functional and Stereotactic Neurosurgery, Hospital for Joint Diseases/Orthopeadic Institute in New York City in 1994 until 1998. He moved with the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center to the NYU Medical Center campus in 1997. In 1998 he also took on responsibilities as the Director of Epilepsy Surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical System, Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Livingston, NJ. He has performed over 2500 surgeries related to epilepsy since 1994. This includes performing over 600 vagus nerve stimulator procedures, the largest number by a single surgeon in the United States. Research interests include computer-assisted surgery and application of computer and digital technology to clinical epilepsy surgery. He has developed specialized stereotactic and surgical tools including computer software and electrodes designed to improve surgical epilepsy treatment by making it safer and achieving better seizure control through less invasive approaches. He is a recognized leader in the field of epilepsy surgery. Current research involves the understanding of seizure manifestation and propagation to help determine surgical planning to alter the epileptic physiology of the brain with surgery.Insurance

Research Summary
Werner K. Doyle, M.D., has developed an interactive image-directed surgical system was developed with the imposed constraints of low cost, partial immersion, and transparency. This was accomplished using a desktop computer, magnetic field localizer, and a head mounted display. Mathematics are a generalization of stereotactic methods applied to the "frameless" setting. The system has been successfully used in over twenty-five epilepsy surgery cases, to position subdural electrodes, localize functional cortex, localize electrodes on images, and improve surgical resections by locating lesions and landmarks. Craniotomy sizes have been reduced and hospital stay shortened.
Other advantages of this system include enhancing intraoperative anatomy, and supplying non-visible data such as functional anatomy in real time to the surgeon while he operates. The technology enhances the surgeon's ability to navigate through surgical space, improves performance of more precise surgery, offers safer surgery, with less collateral damage and is less invasive. This "low end system" was not meant to compete with commercial systems but has proven that interactive image-directed technology improves surgical management.
