Dr. Samadani's principal clinical interest is cranial surgery. As Chief of Neurosurgery at the New York Harbor Heath Care System since 2010 she has helped bring pivotal technology to the operating room for neuronavigation and neuromonitoring during the removal of brain tumors. She also performs spine surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive approaches that preserve spinal mobility. She has performed more artificial cervical disc procedures than any other surgeon in Manhattan.
Her primary research interest is in restorative neurosurgery, or recovery from brain injury due to trauma, hemorrhage, or other causes. She has published work exploring whether cortical neurogenesis occurs after hemorrhage.
In 2010 Dr. Samadani received a grant to establish whether vagus nerve stimulation could improve outcomes from severe traumatic brain injury. While searching for outcome measures to assess recovery in these patients, she developed an algorithm to use eye tracking while watching television or a video. The hypothesis behind its development was that people with more severe injury would be less capable of following the action on the screen while people with milder injury would be able to track the action. While testing the algorithm she serendipitously noted that people with lesions causing swelling in the brain had impaired eye movements. This topic, and its relevance to concussion, subconcussion and military blast injury has been a focus of her research since 2012, and resulted in the submission of four patents.
An additional research interest focuses on the relationship between trauma, brain atrophy and risk factors for hemorrhage. This interest is the subject of a current VA Merit award in collaboration with the Department of Radiology at NYU studying 10,351 veterans.
Dr. Samadani has joint appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry and Physiology & Neuroscience and active collaborations with the Departments of Ophthalmology, Radiology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Emergency Medicine and Trauma. She serves as CoDirector of the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Center for Veteran Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury at New York University.
Dr. Samadani serves on the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Executive Committee for Trauma and Critical Care and on the Executive Board of Women in Neurosurgery.
