Research Summary

Clinical Management of cochlear implant patients with contralateral hearing aids (NIH grant)

Many people who use cochlear implants continue to use a hearing aid in the opposite ear.  At present, the cochlear implant and the hearing aid are fit independently of each other.  The purpose of our study is to develop improved ways to fit the cochlear implant and hearing aid so as to optimize speech recognition benefit.  As part of the study, we evaluate how changes to the way the hearing aid or cochlear implant is programmed affects the ability to understand speech.  Results of our study should lead to a better understanding of the ways in which bimodal listeners (users of both cochlear implants and hearing aids) integrate the information from the two devices in order to understand speech.
