Research Summary

The Aging & Dementia Research Center (ADRC) is an Alzheimer's Disease Center supported by grants from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Mental Health. Services provided by the ADRC include: comprehensive diagnostic evaluations; continuing follow-up assessments; clinical trials of new treatments; management of behavioral symptoms; caregiver counseling and resource referral, and autopsy and neuropathologic diagnosis.

Multidisciplinary research at the ADRC is directed toward the study of normal aging and improved clinical diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Accomplishments include: new evaluation techniques, such as specialized assessments of behavioral problems and memory changes, which have led to improved diagnosis, and pioneering brain imaging techniques, such as PET and MRI scans for studying the patterns and causes of brain failure. These techniques can assist in early diagnosis. Investigators are also conducting longitudinal research and brain studies that have added significant new information about Alzheimer's disease and normal aging.

ADRC is heavily involved in efforts to develop and evaluate new drug treatments for the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, and strategies that support and enhance the well-being of family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients.
