Research Summary

Dr. Chandra''s research in nuclear medicine involved the development of new radionuclides for use in nuclear medicine and the radiation dosimetry of the radiopharmaceuticals. However, for past ten years his research interests have been in the area of MRI. He and Dr. Jensen have been exploring the ways to measure the effects of microscopic susceptibility variations in various tissues, such as iron-rich liver and brain tissues. Results of these studies have potential for use in a variety of diseases where iron plays important role. They have developed a novel pulse sequence, called MFC, to measure the effect of microscopic susceptibility variations. First image of MFC of human brain using this sequence is shown here. Iron rich areas can be easily seen.
