Clinical Responsibilities

Dr. Sophie M. Balzora is a Clinical Instructor in Medicine at the NYU School of Medicine and a gastroenterologist at The Miller Practice, NYU Langone Medical Center.

Board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Balzora has a wide variety of interests within General Gastroenterology, including outpatient consultations on a myriad of digestive diseases and conditions, and attending supervision of the inpatient consultation service at NYU Medical Center's main campus. Her particular clinical interests include colorectal cancer screening and surveillance, minority and women's health, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Her academic responsibilities include training NYU Gastroenterology fellows, serving as preceptor for the NYUSoM PLACE Program, and lecturing to NYU 1st and 2nd year medical students. Her clinical research focuses on improving medical education as it relates to cultural competency.

Dr. Balzora is a Diplomate of Internal Medicine and is Board-certified in Gastroenterology. She is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), and WE CARE (Women Educators, Clinicians, and Researchers) in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. She is a former visiting Inflammatory Bowel Disease fellow of the CCFA.

Dr. Balzora earned her BA in anthropology, graduating cum laude at Princeton University. She completed her medical degree at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. As a native New Yorker, she returned to the area to complete her residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center and earned her Gastroenterology fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center. She is proficient in French and conversational in Haitian Creole.
