Michael C. Wajda - Residency Director

Michael C. Wajda, MD

Residency Director

Faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine are committed to providing the highest quality of residency training and patient care in a collegial atmosphere that stimulates and nurtures professional and personal development. Our three-year residency program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, emphasizes a high level of scholarship and independent thought as well as clinical competence.

We offer residents comprehensive didactic education and opportunities to conduct basic and clinical research in areas such as patient outcomes, anesthesiology mechanisms, cardiac muscle pathophysiology, local anesthetic action, regional anesthesia, cognitive impairment, and pain management.

Throughout the program, we stress the relationship between research and clinical practice management, resulting in outstanding performance on the in-training examinations and the BASIC and ADVANCED portions of board certification. Our graduates hold positions at some of the most prestigious medical institutions throughout the country, and several have become department chairs and clinical leaders.

VIRTUAL TOUR: Trainees in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine receive a comprehensive education that prepares them to become strong clinicians and researchers.

We invite you to visit our department, see our facilities, talk with our residents and faculty, and allow us to participate in your education.

Residency Training

More than 100 house staff members and 200 attendings work together in a friendly atmosphere of teaching and supervision. As of July 1, 2024, our training program will accept 36 residents each year, split between our Manhattan, Long Island, and Brooklyn tracks. For continuity, each resident begins training under the supervision of a single attending.

Manhattan track residents are primarily based at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion or NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. They also complete several rotations at the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System and at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. Brooklyn track residents are primarily based at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn and also rotate through the Manhattan-based hospitals listed above. The Long Island track is primarily based in Long Island, and residents will also rotate in Manhattan at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion. This provides our residents the widest possible experience in patient care and management.

For further information on our program, we invite you to view our Residency Training Program brochure.

First-Year Clinical Anesthesiology

Our first-year clinical anesthesiology residents (CA-1), start with a month of general cases under the direct supervision of a mentor. This is followed by rotations through anesthesiology subspecialties, including cardiothoracic anesthesia, neurosurgical anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, critical care medicine, pain medicine, pre-surgical testing clinic and recovery room.

Second-Year Clinical Anesthesiology

Our second-year clinical anesthesiology residents (CA-2), are encouraged to develop a clearer picture of their career plans. During this time, they finish subspecialty rotations and have several months of general anesthesia to hone their skills. Early in the CA-2 year, residents start to take senior-level calls.

Third-Year Clinical Anesthesiology

The third year of residency (CA-3), includes five months of the most complex patients at each hospital, and six months completing elective rotations. Elective options are vast and can be catered to personal interests and career development. Electives include, but are not limited to, advanced airway, transesophageal echocardiography, intensive care unit, advanced obstetric anesthesiology, regional anesthesiology, advanced pediatric anesthesiology, advanced cardiac anesthesiology, and pain medicine.

All residents take team captain call at Bellevue, where they assume leadership responsibility for the team of residents on call. Team captains make decisions about patient care in the recovery and delivery rooms, the emergency department as well as other parts of the hospital. Most residents consider being a Bellevue team captain to be an extraordinary experience.

Residency Application Process

Residents apply to the program through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). One unique advantage to our application process is that a single interview is all that is needed to qualify for all of the tracks we offer, as well as the two associated preliminary medicine programs. With a single interview, a candidate receives a total of five National Resident Matching Program codes with which to participate in The Match.

NYU Langone does not offer H-1B sponsorship for house staff, residents, or fellows. J-1 sponsorship is available through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
