Center for the Study & Treatment of Pain Education & Research

The mission of the Center for the Study and Treatment of Pain, a part of the Division of Pain Medicine at NYU Langone, is to preserve, improve, and comfort human life. This mission is achieved through our professional education programs and our support of departmental research, which are the foundation of our superior interdisciplinary clinical care.

Our Role in Education

Our center offers training in pain medicine to medical students, residents, and fellows.

Medical Students

Our center periodically offers preceptorships for individuals interested in pain medicine. Clinical, academic, and research experiences are available.

Residents

Trainees in the Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine Residency are encouraged to become involved with the center early in their training and to define an area of interest upon which they can build an academic career. We also help residents become involved in basic and clinical research projects.

Fellows

Our center offers a one-year, multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship. Our fellowship offers research opportunities and works closely with the Department of Neurology, Rusk Rehabilitation, and Department of Psychiatry to provide a multidisciplinary experience.

Our Role in Research

In addition to offering research opportunities to residents and fellows, our faculty provide evidence-based care grounded in the research conducted within the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine and in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Pain Research Program.

Our Role in Patient Care

Physicians from various specialties, including neurology, anesthesiology, physical medicine, psychiatry, spine and neurosurgery, psychology, and rheumatology combine their expertise at the Center for the Study and Treatment of Pain to manage the treatment of patients unable to a have a normal life because of pain. These specialists develop treatment plans using a variety of modalities, including acupuncture, spinal cord stimulation, spinal injections, and cognitive behavioral techniques. Because of our outstanding multidisciplinary clinical care, we have been recognized as a Center of Excellence by the American Pain Society.
