In Alzheimer’s Disease the hippocampus is one of the first regions of the brain to suffer damage; as a result memory problems and disorientation appear among the first symptoms. Its curved shape reminded early anatomists of a seahorse. The name was taken by the sixteenth century anatomist Julius Caesar Aranzi from the Greek word for Seahorse( hippos = horse, καμπος, kampos = sea monster).
Brain donation at the time of death is the most important and generous gift that a person with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia disorder can give. Examining brain tissue is the only method by which we can achieve a definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. The results provide family members with precious information they can use when planning their own futures. Studying brain tissue also provides scientists with valuable information in their quest to unravel the mysteries of these disorders, giving them the opportunity to improve treatment and ultimately to find a much sought-after cure.
Your gift is one that we value deeply and is a selfless act of caring, compassion and hope.
Please consider becoming a brain tissue donor and discuss this possibility with your family.
