Senior Vice President and Vice Dean General Counsel

Annette Johnson, Senior Vice President and Vice Dean General Counsel, will retain her current titles and responsibilities. Ms. Johnson joined the NYU Office of Legal Counsel in 1981, serving as counsel to NYU and NYU Langone Medical Center prior to the combination with Mt. Sinai and thereafter, as Senior Counsel for NYU School of Medicine. She was appointed Senior Vice President and General Counsel for NYU Hospitals Center in October 2001. As the chief legal officer for the School and the Hospital, Ms. Johnson has been responsible for all legal matters concerning NYU Langone Medical Center and has developed its Office of Legal Counsel, which now includes four Associate General Counsel. She has been involved in the major legal events that mark the Medical Center's history: the affiliation with the Hospital for Joint Diseases, the affiliation and disaffiliation with Downtown Hospital, the separation of the Hospital from NYU and the soon-to-be-effective reunion, the combination with Mount Sinai Hospital, and the financings and governance changes that resulted in dissolution of that combination, the execution of the agreement under which Remicade was developed and the sale of the Remicade royalties.

In addition to her responsibilities in legal matters, Ms. Johnson provides leadership to the Office of Audit and Compliance, the Institutional Review Board, and the Office of Government Affairs, all of which report to her. Ms. Johnson established the Medical Center's Office of Audit and Compliance, hiring the first Medical Center Vice President for Audit and Compliance, and fostering this office's growth to a staff of fourteen providing comprehensive compliance training and support to both the School and Hospital. Under her leadership, the IRB staff was restructured, policies and processes were comprehensively revised to provide a researcher-friendly environment while continuing to protect human subjects, and the IRB is looking forward to accreditation by the end of this year. In the area of Government Affairs, the Medical Center has greatly expanded its activities and relationships with officials in policy and appropriations matters.

Ms. Johnson received her J.D. degree summa cum laude from the University of Toledo, where she was valedictorian. After graduating from law school, she held a faculty and administrative appointment at the University of Toledo College of Law and served in the New York State Office of the Attorney General prior to joining NYU.
