The program provides rigorous training and is based on a strong background in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. The first year is usually spent in course work; Physiology is the only course required of all students in the Program. To fulfill the University requirement of 27 course units, students choose from the many selections offered at NYU Medical Center and at NYU's campus at Washington Square. Furthermore, students are encouraged to take advantage of the unique wealth of academic courses available at other institutions in the metropolitan area. Before beginning thesis research, the student must pass a qualifying examination covering several areas of physiology and his or her proposed thesis research. Students typically present their work at two or three national meetings before graduating.
Postdoctoral fellows spend most of their time in the laboratory working with faculty and graduate students. Fellows can meet and network with the large number of faculty in the Program during the weekly meetings sponsored by many NYU Medical Center departments, journal clubs and seminar series.
